Human Persistence

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 18 June 2007 12:08 (A review of Rabbit-Proof Fence)

This movie is about persistence, both good and bad. The persistence of 3 little girls to go home from training camp they have been forced to go to because they are half-breeds. And the persistence of people to try and change other people, such as the bureaucrat that truly thinks he is helping half breeds by breeding the aborigine out of them. It's a simple story, and the dialog is sparse, but film does make an impact on you.

Open Mind

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 17 June 2007 11:28 (A review of The Lake House)

If you can keep an open mind, and just gloss over the "Time Difference", than this isn't a half bad romance. The photography is quite nice. I think the thing I liked about this movie the most was the nice peaceful, gentle air about it. In a world where images are bombarded at us 24 hours a day, this was a nice respite. The story was interesting and the chemistry was pretty good. All in all, not bad. Worth the rental fee.

What's the Deal?

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 14 June 2007 05:46 (A review of Match Point)

What's the deal with all these movies with ALL unlikable characters. This is another one. I hated everybody in this movie and couldn't care less what happened to them. And these were a bunch of overly rich, bratty people. My favorite part of the movie was when it was over so I wouldn't have to watch it anymore.

Weaving a tale

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 13 June 2007 09:08 (A review of The Lady and the Unicorn: A Novel)

Chevalier once again uses a piece of art as a starting point for her story. This time it's the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries. And like the tapestries, this tale is woven from many different viewpoints. As almost nothing is known about the making of the tapestries she uses supposition to flesh out a nice story. Each chapter is from the view point of one of 8 characters in the book, and not all the characters are sympathetic. But like the tapestries themselves, you need to give it time to enjoy the whole picture. Of course it's hard not to compare it to the "Girl with the Pearl Earring", and this is pale in comparison. But if you can distance yourself from that work you may find yourself enjoying this one in it's own style.

So Much Anger

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 13 June 2007 05:47 (A review of Crash)

This is an interweaving of many people's stories. Most of them very angry people. Oh, they all have good sides, but mainly you see the anger. Racism seems to be the outlet for everyone's anger, but it seemed secondary to me. But I never felt empathy for any of these people, except the locksmith. Although the acting was good, and I thought Don Cheadle did an especially fine job. If you liked this movie you would probably enjoy Babel. I was just glad when this movie was over.

Great Eye Candy, No Story.

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 13 June 2007 01:39 (A review of Ocean's Twelve)

I was heartbroken when I heard that Ocean's 12 was being made. As a huge fan of Ocean's 11, I knew that 12 would only be a disappointment. Now, it's never hard to watch beautiful people run around Europe and be smart-alecs. But that is the best this movie has to offer. The plot is pathetic and silly. You don't trust anything from moment one, so you are never really sucked into it. And therefor not surprised at any surprises. And the Julia Roberts plot line is horrible. Great eye candy, no story. Don't bother if you can find anything else better to watch.

Nice Version

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 11 June 2007 05:31 (A review of Cruel Intentions)

I like this updated version of Dangerous Liaisons. Geller and Phillippe are delicious as the bad duo, and their chemistry is excellent. I have a little trouble with the way Phillippe's and Witherspoon's characters react to each other in the beginning, but that resolves nicely by the end. But the slapstick of Miss Blair's character never fits in with the rest of the movie. This movie does one of the most erotic non-sex scenes on film. All in all a good film.

Boys and Tears

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 5 June 2007 09:59 (A review of The Cure)

The story of two misfit boys, one the new kid in town, the other a boy with aids. They become obsessed with finding a cure for aids, in an optimistic way that only kids can have. They do stupid things in a kid-logic sort of way that you know you might have done too. And the portrayals of the adults are done with a wonderful authenticity as well. It's one of those movies that makes me think while I'm crying my eyes out.

Connecting Short Stories

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 5 June 2007 09:59 (A review of A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters)

Really this is a book of short stories, that are all connected. I've never been a fan of short stories because I have trouble connecting with the characters, but that wasn't really a problem in this book. I liked the way the stories all collided, and liked the premise. Unfortunately I didn't like the last 3 stories at all, and that undoes everything the author has built up until then. I was disappointed.

A Poke in the Eye

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 2 June 2007 02:50 (A review of The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!)

Naked Gun does not stand the test of time well. The gags have all been done to death, and better. The political humor is pretty thin, and only for those who have a memory of that time. I only laughed once or twice. And the scenes with O.J. Simpson really gave me the creeps. The slap-stick is just old, and not creative. And I even had a hard time not falling asleep. Not a good sign.
